Chairs message for a Happy New Year!!
Looking back over the past year there were many memorable notes written in the history books that mold what makes us American citizens and our country what it is. We saw the inauguration of our first black president and were shocked with the death of Michael Jackson. We feared for our lives and health with the outbreak of the H1N1 virus and still anxiously await the true impact of the health reform. The state of the economy remains a heavily weighted headline in the newspapers and lives of friends and family.
I’ve heard others use the quote, “The richest man in the world is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least” and although I’ve goggled the quote, I’ve not been able to pinpoint who said it. Regardless, the point I am trying to make is this quote has spoken so many times to me over this past year. I know for myself, I contributed much more to volunteer organizations than I ever have in years past. My husband and I have been blessed to have jobs, healthy children and fortunate that we’ve been able to share our blessings with those who need help. Typically when family asks me what I would like for Christmas, I ask for Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards man. This year was different. This year I asked for volunteerism. I asked for my loved ones to volunteer their time, talents or money to benefit someone in the world who needs help and then tell me of their experiences. Would you know that it was my 19 year old daughter who gave me a great Christmas present. She gave blood. She will never know who’s life she will help but she knows that she did something that will help someone in need. Being in college, she does not have a lot of money or time but she knew a simple contribution such as giving blood fit within my Christmas wish list.
As you reflect on the events of 2009 globally and locally that impacted your life, My wish for you and your family is that those events are ones that you can see positive value. Granted not every event has a glorious desirable effect but there can always be a lesson learned to carry us forward in a healthful manner. In this next year, consider how you can contribute your time and talents (not necessarily money) to help someone, a family member, a friend or even a stranger in need.
Best wishes for a healthy, prosperous and giving New Year!
