With the doldrums of Summer hiring behind us, Fall is a great time to update your resume. Labor Day to Thanksgiving is typically an active interview season. Don’t be late when opportunity knocks. If you haven’t updated your resume in the past year the following four steps will help you bring your resume up to date with new focus and polish.

1. Identify your new career objection.

If you’re dissatisfied with your current job this is the time to ask why. Before making any changes to your resume ask yourself the following questions:

* What part of my job would you rather not do in my next position?

* What skills, tasks or responsibilities would I like to continue in my next job?

* What other industry might I use my skills?

* What other occupation might I apply my skills?

Your response to these questions will shed light on the changes in your career path. Write out your answers and do a reality check to see how likely you are to obtain your new career direction.

2. Get rid of the old to make room for the new information.

Your new resume should reflect your current career direction. The first resume rule says that everything within your resume should relate to your career direction. This means you may need to delete information about outdated technology. You may also need to weed out old responsibilities that you no longer want to perform. If your resume includes special training or certifications that are no longer needed take them off as well.

Additionally, check your accomplishments from earlier years. If they do not support your career objection either delete or adjust them to relate. You might even need to take off your earliest employment entries if they represent a completely different career path.

3. Add your most recent employment entry.

Write your current employment entry in light of your new career focus. Do not include responsibilities that you do not wish to perform in your next job. Include only what you want to continue to do. Use job postings as a guide for key words that you’ll need to use as verbiage. Job postings also provide clues to transferable skills, technology and education that you’ll want to include.

4. Add the final touch, accomplishments.

No resume is complete without accomplishments. They are the talking points of your resume. Even if the past year hasn’t been as productive or positive as the past, find something to brag about. Think back on the challenges of the past year and how you solved them. Did you find a way to save time, cut costs or improve performance? Those are your accomplishments. They tell perspective employers that you are a problem solver for today’s difficult business environment. If your goal is an internal promotion your accomplishments remind your employer of the value you bring to the organization.

Once you’ve updated your resume you’ll be ready for any opportunity that comes your way. This may be your season for advancement, change or transition—get ready for it!

Abstract: As government agencies increase scope of regulations, companies acquire diverging technologies, and IT responsibilities increase the need for balancing specific regulatory demands will also increase. In some cases regulatory demands may appear to be in conflict and cause resource planning issues within the IT department. FDA regulatory guidances verses Sarbanes-Oxley compliance demands can certainly be viewed as one such example. With good planning the two guidances can be balanced to complement each other. Thus reducing the strain on IT resources and facilitate common development, issue management, and validation efforts. This paper will explore an approach to resolving differences, balancing the two guidances, and focusing IT compliance efforts into one compliance effort.

It’s easy to loose career focus during the summer months. Kids home from school, warm sunny weather and household projects tend to distract job seekers. Additionally, the interview process often gets disrupted while employers accommodate multiple vacation schedules. These interruptions become an easy excuse to put a job search on hold till September. Don’t give in to the temptation to take the summer off. Your summer sabbatical will add months to your job search. Increased competition in September means a smaller margin of error in interview performance. Keep your job-search momentum throughout the summer to avoid frustration in the fall.

Here are three tips to keep your job search moving forward.

Stay on track.

Keep a schedule of weekly job-search activities that include networking for leads. Summer is a great time for increased social activities, which can quite naturally lead to discussions about your search. Additionally, tap into your on line social network to find people who know people within your targeted companies who may be able to introduce you to hiring managers. Don’t over look the potential help of others in uncovering job leads.

Don’t let your project “to-do” list take precedence over your job search activities. Yes, Summer is a great time to build a deck, paint a kitchen or landscape your yard, but don’t allow your projects to keep you from moving forward toward a new job. Take care of your job-search goals first, then use all those extra day-light hours to fix up your nest.

Don’t get impatient.

It’s easy to let job-search activities slide when interviews get delayed, rescheduled or canceled. It’s best to accept that hiring stalls are a natural summer phenomenon. Use your extra time to research targeted companies in greater depth. The insider information you pick up may give you the extra “leg up” in the interview to win out your competition. Remember, even though the hiring process seems slower during summer companies still interview and make offers June through August.

Keep your interview skills sharp.

The normal tendency in summer is to neglect critical interviewing skills. The idea is “once interviews start back up I’ll pull out that book and get ready.” Bad idea. Don’t get caught off guard. Start perfecting your interview skills BEFORE your next interview is scheduled. Minimally you should be able to:

State your strengths and weaknesses

Give reasons for short job durations

Sell your transferable skills

Give examples of your accomplishments

Remember, these are just the minimum issues you should be able to handle in an interview. Every job seeker has their own list of questions they hope they don’t get asked. You must identify the questions that make you squirm and be ready with great answers.

Following these tips will help you maintain your job search momentum during the busy Summer months. Remember, work on your job search, then work on your tan. Build your interview skills then build the deck. You’ll be way ahead of the September crowd and months ahead in landing your next job.

Undoubtedly, this is the toughest year on record to land a new job. Reaching your career goal will take courage and nerves of steel. Are you up to the challenge? Here are three tips for job-search endurance that will keep you on the right track toward your employment goal.

1. Keep your career goal realistic.

This is not the time to strike out in a risky career direction. Following your heart toward a career in which you have little qualifications could yield months of frustration as you find yourself competing against legions of candidates far more qualified. Unless you are in the position to hold out for a very long job search, concentrate on positions where you are best qualified.

2. Realize it will take longer to land your next position.

If you’ve never experienced a lengthy job search, set your expectations out several months and practice patience. You will apply for many positions as the perfect candidate, and get no response. Expect that. You will conduct perfect interviews and hear nothing back. Expect that as well. Just remember that eventually the right company with the right job at the right time will come your way if you stay calm and focused and don’t let discouragement keep you from moving forward. Just keep with it.

3. Write a better resume than your competition.

Less jobs and more applicants equals extremely high competition. The quality of your resume has never been more important. For the best possible resume keep these guidelines in mind:

Focus your resume. Avoid a one-size-fits-all resume.

Showcase your best information in the top half of page one.

Include accomplishments that illustrate your ability to solve today’s business challenges.

4. Sharpen your interview skills.

With employers interviewing only the best of the best, when you are chosen to interview be sure you are your competitive best. You CANNOT “just wing” an interview and expect to be called back for a second. Today it takes solid interview strategy to earn a second round of interviews. Interview books are helpful, but they usually fall short of teaching you how to read the interviewer’s mind to understand his/her hiring motivations. A study in the art of selling is more effective to achieve great interview performance. A few basic selling strategies include:

Asking the right questions to understand the interviewer’s “hot button” motivations.

Formulate answers around the interviewer’s motivations.

Know your accomplishments well enough to weave them effectively through your interview to achieve top candidate status.
Throughout 2009, the best jobs will go to those who persevere and stay focused. Keeping your expectations and goals realistic will help prevent the emotional ups and downs. Prepare for your job search as if you were competing in a marathon. With patience, endurance and skill you will win your next job.
Professional Development Meeting
March 20, 2007
5-8
North Raleigh Hilton
5:00pm: Speaker: Mike Crooks – Getting the team involved by Using SWOT and Storyboarding
The standard practice for conducting a SWOT Analysis includes the collection and analysis of an organization’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The results are usually represented in a SWOT Profile (also called a TOWS Matrix). The ‘Storyboarding’ technique, developed by Mike Crooks in the early 1990’, uses an alternate analysis of the SWOT input to produce actionable outcome of a strategic planning activity.
The difference between the traditional approach to SWOT and the Storyboarding approach is in the presentation and analysis, which is based on:
· Establishing the ‘Driving Charter’ for the organization that simply states ‘if we apply our Strengths in a focused and diligent manner we can achieve our objectives (represented by the Opportunities).
· Acknowledging the ‘Organizational Hurdles’ to success; represented by the patterns of Weaknesses.
· Governing our plans to monitor and mitigate risk as defined by the true Critical Success Factors (CSF’s) as discovered by the correlation between an existing ‘Organizational Hurdle’ and a perceived and/or potential threat being realized.
6:00pm: Networking / informal jobs discussion.
6:30pm: Dinner
7:30pm Speaker: Angela Hall – Case Study of Storyboarding with ASQ Raleigh
During the annual strategy session for ASQ Raleigh, Mike Crooks lead the Board through the storyboarding technique. See how the tool works and what the results have been!
Feel free to come for any portion of the event. Payment is only required for those joining us for the dinner.
