A description of how the GQM approach has been employed to define an evaluation framework for software process improvement projects. The GQM approach has been coupled with the Measurements and Analysis process area of the Capability Maturity Model Integration to allow management to identify the economic benefits of software process improvement projects. Details on how this methodology has been employed in software organizations will be presented.

Topic: Improved Software License Utilization

License cost and availability is a key contributor to the overall effectiveness of a semiconductor chip design. A Lean-Six-Sigma project was initiated to improve the utilization of licenses during the development process. Various statistical tools including ANOVA and Regression where used along with Lean Process Optimization to improve the utilization process and increase the license utilization by 17%.

An important task that our section accomplished on October 1, 2008 was the submission of our Annual 08-09 Business Plan. Within our plan, we have objectives that are both short-term and long-term. We have taken concerted efforts to focus our energy on value added services that our members benefit from most.

• Offering skill utilization practice through volunteer opportunities

The Raleigh ASQ section has one of the most dedicated membership foundations. We will miss you Shyam Banik!

Shyam transitioned out of this phase at his request on September 9th after a month long & extraordinarily brave battle for life.

Shyam joined ASQ in 1970, with member number 4720 he received certifications for Quality Auditor and Quality Engineer.

During and after a long tenure with Nortel, Shyam was active in ASQ Canada as well as ASQ Raleigh.
